Snowdreams

Growing up in a small city in a large family, we looked forward to snow and winter for all the free entertainment it provided, it still always makes me feel young at heart to see those first few snow flakes flitter down from the heavens.

The winds howl and shriek in the north woods

I watch the snow smothering slow the land

As I wipe away frosted window panes

Making little peek a boo circles with my hand

My old toboggan leans against the coat rack

Mitts, boots and parka strewn by the door

Like anxious soldiers on the eve of battle

Just waiting for the word to charge once more

The scratchy Victrollia announced the town closed

Temperature took a dip below the freezing mark

There’ll be races down old Donnelly’s Hill

Later maybe skating in Cherry Pond Park

From the woodstove wafts the smell of bread

Baked beans simmer on the burners up above

Mom rocks the newest baby close to her breast

Swaddling him in the arms of mother’s love

I hear the roar and grind of the monster plow

Stacking mounds where shovels already cleared

If I listen close I’ll hear old Mr. Lovett cursing

Beneath the icicles hanging from his Santa beard

I finish off my porridge with sweet molasses goo

Drink the gritty powdered milk in a gulp or two

Munched down with my peanut buttered toast

Look to Mom to see if I am free to leave you know

Finally dressed in multi woolen layers

I’m out the door to engage the wonderland

Enchanted memories and joy yo last forever

Only the young and young at heart can understand!

... and KB!!! I was hangin like an icicle on your every word, there, Felix... Such sweet passion in your voice and the well-loved and remembered images are as sharp and crisp as that snowy air. Pure and unadulterated memoir is this, and HAS TO BE MADE INTO A BOOK!! :))

Absolutely wonderful trip down memory lane...I could see this little boy standing there watching his mom feed the baby but eating like a little hungry wolf to get done to just get outside!!

Adorable picture you painted!!

Love Tinka :)

What wonderful memories you've conjured up with this exceptional poem, Fee. I grew up in a large family and small town, too, and I can relate. Throughout the winter, every Friday after school meant sledding and then having steaming hot chili and hot chocolate at home to warm up. Thank you for the memories, my friend.
Love,
CJ

Lovely poem, alas living in a temperate zone, I have only seen a rare hail storm, not much to talk about. I did see snow on the alps, but this cannot be compared when liiving in those conditions. Victor
