I have had a few of my bad days go by with some pain in chest etc but feeling much better now, however these pains always remind me of my own immortality and remind me that things should be said while we are still able to say them and this write is a good example of that, it is also a little apart from my usual for as you can see there is no rhyming in it...

My Pledge To You

Dear Daughter,

When my time comes please shed few tears

Fret not in remorse, and in sad finalities

I hope you do not mourn too long my final passing

I pray you celebrate instead the times we shared

Do not bring flowers that should live on in their garden

I need not polished memorials of gray granite stone

With my name chiseled on it to mark my passing

No, honour me by allowing me to die as I have lived

Sparse, simple, and hopefully loved and remembered

I promise my soul will live on and you will see me again and again

In the spirit of your children and grandchildren

As I have seen my own dear parents in you

I will be a smile you catch a glimpse of on your child face

Perhaps a joke or a prank that they play on you

Maybe you will see me when you look into their sparkling blue eyes

I will be in the small arms that offer a hug out of the blue

When I go I leave to you my true final legacy

Alas not money or wealth, but to me it is worth far more

It is the knowledge that I lived my life

Loving you until the end and died knowing…

I was loved by you in return!

Oh how precious! and knowing you, my friend, there were tears in your eyes as you wrote this. There are tears in mine as I read it. I am battling ovarian cancer right now, stage 3, so this poem has very deep meaning for me as well. This is priceless, thank you! Take courage dear Felix. I love you!

You received so many comments telling you this is beautiful and the reason is that this is a wonderfully moving piece on a UNIVERSAL theme.

Many lines that I love, I can hardly pick out one.

What I feel in your poem also makes me think of what I say about my grandmother in my poem "Cremains and Images". Memory and continuity are indeed more important than names chiseled on a stone.

(In your introduction, I noticed you wrote about your "immortality". A Freudian slip for "mortality"?) :-)

Thank you for this poem...

Damn it Felix, you made me cry reading this. This is so heartwarming and so full of love right from your heart, and that is a very precious thing. Love is a very good legacy to leave our children when we pass on, and we hope that we were loved by them in return, but, sometimes, they don't say it in words, but show it in how they do things for us. Thank you Felix for sharing this very heartwarming and precious legacy to your daughter. God bless your heart.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

Your love and respect sets an example for others when thoughts of journeying on comes to the plate. We must leave the footprints to presperity to the children and grandchilden to forge on in our stead, You are the epitome of the word FATHER and GRANDFATHER.

Oh my gosh Fee...what love went into these words. Captivated and tearful as I translate them to my relationship with my own father who has had more than one serious go of it lately with life and death matters. Life is fragile...words are precious...do what you can while you can. Write with abandon...and share, share , share your words. I cannot begin to tell you how this has touched me.

I can hardly bring myself to comment, Pops. But, in his heart, I hope that my Dad was like you. I didn't really know him, apart from being a psychiatric case. Sorry... this is comin out all wrong. You're not a basket case, but your surrogate daughter/friend is certainly one!! :)) Grief does funny things to the capacity to speak and write, but the focus you have managed to bring to your own mortality and final wishes is astounding. I am not too sure that, if I WAS your daughter (you KNOW this is our little joke!! :)) I could bring myself to read this right now. But it sure will be TOTALLY PRECIOUS at the appropriate moment. Since my Mum's departure last March, I have discovered many things I wished she could have shown me while she breathed... and plenty I wish she had never left for me to find!! Shock horror!! But, the closeness you have with your daughter is such that this will be a very great blessing to both of you at that "magic moment". Don't be in too much of a rush... we are selfish and greedy for you here. But, yes, I have done something similar in my darker moments, too. And nearly wrote a poem in the summer about my own funeral... so I can totally see where you're coming from. Sorry to ramble. This caught me off guard. Be well, Pops... that's an order!! Iread that if you want to achieve something in afterlife you should write your own obitury. It will give you a help on how to lead your life. And that is what you have done here. Very commendable aims, and your daughter should be prud of you. Victor
