My daughter found and returned to me an old journal of mine that I once (long before the days of computer) used to write my poems and thoughts of love in, this poem was inspired when I saw that old notebook...

Poem Artwork

The Old Man’s Journal

Just an old ragged notebook

Dog eared and soiled

Piece of wool for a bookmark

Marking years he has toiled

Scraps of memories in pencil

Poems he chose every love word

Secrets not meant to be shared

Voice not meant to be heard

Little pencilled reminders

Of past lovers he’s known

Small doodles in the corners

Past love’s he’s outgrown

Now he sits on a suitcase

As he waits for his ride

To the home he is going

Behind stays his lost pride

In the can by the stairway

Filled with rubbish and trash

With teardrops in his eyes

He throws his life with a crash

.

A bittersweet look at life through a talented poet's notebook. I do hope you didn't throw it away, Fee. That's so much a part of you! Excellent poem.

Ah, Felix... the past came back to haunt the old man, or should I say justify the old man. I hope we all have old, old notebooks to remind us of what we felt a long time ago. Excellent write.

Peace. Joyce

O, Fee...this is beautifully written and so sad; but wished the man would have kept his long-ago dreams and doodles! Can't help but ponder: What would I take to "the home".
