Sometimes we need to take stock of ourselves and try and see what we hope others see when they look at us...

Self Portrait of a Poet 2007

Whiskers grayed white with age and time

Frame lips that tasted love and wine

Wrinkles round eyes that oft knew tears

Also speak of laughter through the years

Head vainly shaved hides widow’s peak

Easier on the eyes he thinks that’s weak

A small golden hoop hangs from one ear

Reminds him of a brother no more here

His body paid for sins most men share

Still not too bad for fifty three years

But his soul is tired and his heart is worn

Old age threatens him oft with scorn

Yet he stands tall, he speaks his mind

Writes his colored words for all to find

A husband, a father a grandfather too

A writer and poet a good friend true

That’s his mirror view in morning light

After facing his demons in the night.

Fee,
You seem to have aged tastefully as that wine. Obvious you are a proud man. Husband, Father, Grandfather, most of all a dear friend to each of us here. That demon, give him h...., speak your mind. Loved the poem.

You'll have to set up a "no demon" zone around you at night so a smile will find it's way to your face again. It's a good write and the honest look at ourselves at this age. Finding things to wake the spirit to the dance brings many things to mind, I simply haven't figured out it all out yet. Yet working on it. Smile more, worry less, what ever will be, will make it someday. Enjoyed the write. Lady J

I love both the humility and the honest appraisal in this self-portrait, Felix. No humbug here. And, as such, it touches us deeply with its threads of celebration and pensiveness. Honour the questions, savour the journey... You've only just begun and have so much yet to give and to fulfill. Keep wrestling... that's how you know you're alive! :)) And not bad???? Pretty darn good, I'd say... I've got over my 50-hump from last week and have to say, it's not as bad as I thought it would be 50 years and 4 days on... A stout and noble heart are you, and all things true. You wear your medals well! :)) Onwards and upwards, Darlin... LOL K xx

such a poet you are, Fee - both in the mirror and to your readers. Hiding your widow's peak - nice touch.

My dad taught me, and often said, if you like what you see when you look into the mirror then you're a good person. I'm glad you like what you see and this is a great poem. The last line ends it perfectly. Well done dear Fee. And, you truly are a good friend.
Hugs,
Marcia

This is a great challenge to us poets, to try and do this kind of self-criticism - in rhyme! I'm not sure many of us could succeed. Well done!

Your Self Portrait is Outstanding!!! Wow, did you put it all out there. I believe that this was a hard write because it is so hard to describe yourself. It's deep, it's fun and it's so you.

You write well, saying with a few words what you are and was but yet too young to imagine the wisdom that many years into the future will mellow you into a letter's giant.
