Blue Line Blues
Riding the Blue Line bus to Halifax…
Cold coffee in a paper cup,
Kissing acid in my gut
Breaking ties with yesterday
That just left me in a rut
Mother and child in the last row
Like Madonna and her child
Little guy drinking from a bottle
Falls asleep on Mommy’s breast
Mother sleeping across three seats
So grateful for a little rest
Old man in a black fedora
In the seat closet to the door
His luggage is a Walmart bag
His cane is on the floor
Invited to visit a relative
He doesn’t know no more
College girl on a budget
Heading home to take a break
Misses her friends and family
Wonders if school was a mistake
Daddy would meet her at the depot
Solemn as a funeral wake
Biker dude in leather jacket
Helmet sitting on his lap
Bloodshot from last night’s brew
Trying to grab a little nap
Sips recovery from a brown bag
Says to hell with all the crap
Passengers riding on the midnight run
From seedy depots and buses past their prime
Each seat holds a hundred different stories
That unravels like a clever rhyme
Unwinding on the Blue Line Bus to Halifax
It will take you back in time.

Traveling the roads of the U.S. during my childhood, I used to create games of seeing how many different state license plates I would observe during the trip. And, at out-of-hand sporting events, etc., I have often gazed at people, wondering their backgrounds, envisioning their lives, etc. In our age of busyness, these quiet times of reflection are a wonderful gift.
Brilliant piece of work. I enjoyed this, very much.
