I am just back off vacation and this old farm caught my attention while visiting friends in the country and the story for the most part is true ...

Poem Artwork

Sepia Toned Farm

Rusted old cars forsaken like sad broken hearts

Neglected hay fields and scattered tractor parts

The suns boiling my blood and I’m growing old

Times fleeting memories, so easily sold

The neighbors tell a sad story of its history past

As I sit on a fender where a tree shadows cast

This place once lived and breathed its bounty to share

Now only spirits are left it seems so unfair

Old John Deere tractor sits idly on cinder block legs

Poor dog his tongue hanging just sits there and begs

The farms seen better days…foreclosure is near

Sons moved to the cities, for the land they don’t care

Now I look at this farm that once was a home

I feel such sadness, in a subdued sepia tone

No more cows or chickens, no crops in the fall

The combines and the government took mostly all

The old man passed on, his poor heart lost its fight

His dear wife was taken to the nursing home last night

She thinks of him and their farm as she looks at the clock

Tomorrow at noon the auctioneer’s gavel hits the block

once happy family farms are dissapearing, small farmers can't make it anymore....Children gone away..no one cares about the hertage any more. But wait till the parents are gone and see what's then in store.

Fee,

The vacation did you justice! You look wonderful, and especially with your always warm and endearing smile.

Sepia is one of my all-time favorite tones, and I think you have worked wonders with it here! Very powerful use of your photo and your poetic acumen, in telling a tale.

Welcome back, dear Friend!

Hi Sepis Fee!

This is the sort of nostalgia that will get my attention every time. You look happy and satisfied and it's great seeing that smile. I love the way you take me back and the picture is an excellent choice to attend this fine writing.
Love,
Susan

Great picture tells a good story with your words. Yes, many farms have been lost this way. Many try to hang on to the land that has been in the family for years and the kids just have no want for that kind of life. Right or wrong, I just wish that they could be hooked up with other young couples who would love to work the land for them. I know there are many of them out there also. If there was just a way to get them together. Lady J

A wonderful, feeling poem with great potential. A little rearranging of words, a little more specifics - what kind of car is that? I'm taking a poetry class, afterward, I'll let you know if my suggestions are any good at all! (grin) Nice work overall.

Heartwrenching story! Will it ever reach its potential again? Or will it be re-made into another housing complex, replacing green fields with concrete? Hate to see such devastation, with the effects on wildlife as the green land diminishes.
Your poet's heart captured the story behind this array of sepia remnants. Well-done!

Well Felix I have to agree with Tinka, you do look sexy there and that would catch any eye as for your poem, it saddens me but truth be known the farming life is not what it use to be, most of the kids today don't want to get their hands dirty. It filled my heart and soul for those of long ago. You never dissappoint us with your words. Thank you.

We all are going the way the old rusted cars and abandoned farms when our earth offers can't offer one more crop.
A sad but tender story from a man with a caring heart.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Sad poem though very well constructed. Like you I feel sad to see fallow fields, full of broken machinery. Especially when I remember there is a child dying every minute out of hunger.

You sure you haven't sneaked into OZ on the quiet here Fee :)
We got farms like this going under the gavel every day...
For the drought still continues up in the northern regions and the farmers have to sell out, or starve!

In any case, a deeply melancholic reality of what once was, superbly executed in Sepia tones.

You told this sad story with compassion, Felix. You make us see that the farm, not only its inhabitants, is a living thing.
