Night Table to Kitchen Table
threadbare ragged jeans
faded Jimi Hendrix tee
drop at foot of the bed
like the discarded skin
of an old rattler snake
who’s survived too long
heart pills, a water glass
accompany reading glasses
a second hand John Grisham
old dog eared book
read sometimes to escape
the reality of time
slip under the covers
cold dreams unfulfilled
wrap around naked flesh
as night sounds echo in
empty rooms and hallways
leaving could haves, what ifs
sleep offered grudgingly
by vindictive Sandman
mayhap fear of not waking
regardless mind raped by
too many nightmares from
his book of Counted Sorrows
rising long before dawn
gives birth again to the sun
Sips from chipped and stained
mug of well steeped tea
a world’s weight presses
as the poet begins his day…

It is tinged in sadness but raw life revealed by the poet who felt it!

I LOVE the WAY YOU deCided to write this out!!!
drop at foot of the bed
like the discarded skin
of an old rattler snake - I could SEE this, right at the bottom of the bed on the floor! discarded, such a strong word too! Perfectely used, with a dear Jimi T-shirt.

Sounds like a disruptive night. For me, this poem has a grouchy tone. I'm thinking that's because if I was the protagonist, I'd be grouchier than hell. Not being able to sleep gets to me because I do it so rarely. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

his book of Counted Sorrows
But those probably make the best poems.
(I did not know poets/writers go through nights like these.) Your poem reminded me of an old song "Only the Lonely" ... the style is great and I like it, it could be part of a story or intro of a novel.
