Schilderswijk is the migrant quarter of The Hague, effectively a society within society, an area populated and frequented solely by migrants from Africa/Asia and their descendends who remain migrants forever.
If you don't speak Dutch or Afrikaans, please ignore the original version of the poem and go to the English version directly.

Mijn Schilderswijk

De buurt van dromen

Ik geloofde het nooit

Dat ik van je hou

Ik geloofde het nooit dat ik ooit

een gedicht zal gaan schrijven

In deze ongeliefde taal

Met de blanke schreeuw van de meeuwen

Over de Scheveningse duinen

Die voortbreekt uit de diepste grond

Van de grijze Noorse vloed

Gaat mijn ziel uit in zinj hartstocht

En vertrekt naar de zee

Witte schepen gaan varen

Naar de landen van zon

Zal je ooit terug komen,

M'n hart?

Zeg het niet!

Ik weet wat je voel

Op dit vreemde moment

Met het zout tussen je tanden

En met de bloem van de woestijn

In je uitgedroogde ziel

Het was de zouk op het plein

En de buurt van moskeen tussen grachten

een thuisland wel,

Maar ook een haven

Van liefde

'n opvang voor de zachtheid

Die ik voel

Zonder het te weten

En die ik nu zonder schaamte

Begrijp

Heb je me eens gezien?

Ik was de buurman die je niet kende

Die jullie zagen en nooit hebben gezien

De man uit die buurt

Waar jullie nooit wilden gaan wonen

En die jullie daarom

Niet kunnen kennen

Zijn jullie altijd blind geweest?

Hoe is de bom gaan

Ontploffen?

Mijn ziel vliegt door de lucht

Wat zie je?

'n vreemde vogel?

Zijn  het jullie

Of ben ik het geweest?

Wat maakt dat uit

Als wij vliegen naar de dood toe

Zoals een meeuw naar de wind toe vliegd

Over de grijze Noorse Zee

Wat koud het is geworden!

Jullie begrijpen noog steeds

Niets

Wel leefde ik in een ghetto

Maar mijn liefde, mijn Schilderswijk

Was een droom van 'n thuis

Waar mijn ziel kan voortleven

In een nieuwe lichaam

En waar ik mijn eerste stap kan gaan doen

Terug

Naar het moederland

Van het hart

My schilderswijk

District of dreams

I never believed

That I love you

I never believed

I would once write a poem

In this language unloved

With the blank cries of the sea gulls

Over Scheveningen's dunes

Forthbreaking from the deepest bottom

Of the grey and cold Northern stream

My soul goes forth in its yearning

And makes its way to the sea

White ships are sailing

For the lands of the sun

Shall ever you return,

My heart?

Do not say anything!

I know what you feel

In this strange moment

With the salt between your teeth

And the flower of the desert

Down in your dried-up soul

It was the souq in the plein

And the neighbourhood of mosques between grachts

A homeland, though

But also a haven

Of love

A shelter for the tenderness

That I felt

Without knowing

And which I now without shame

Understand

A hidden oasis of light

And of the stillness of thoughts

Which I never spoke out in those days

(I shall not speak of the violence

And of the other kind stillness

That was the silence of a grave

Which now broke open

Like a wound or a scar in the wind

That beats my eyes

My searching eyes in the night

Which never again can be closed)

Did you ever once see me?

I was the neighbour you didn't know

Who you saw and who you never did see

The man from that district

Where you never wanted to live

That's why you can't have

Known me

Have you been blind all the time?

How has the bomb gone

To explode?

My soul flies through the air

What do you see?

A strange bird?

Were it you

Or was it me?

What does that matter

As we fly toward death

Like a sea gull flies toward the wind

Over the grey Northern Sea

How cold it has become!

You still don't understand

A thing

Of course, I have lived in a ghetto

But my love, my Schilderswijk

Was the dream of a home

Where my soul can live on in a new body

And where I could do

My first step

Back

To the heart's

Motherland

This is wonderfully poetic and a lesson in world education for me, Mahdi. Thank you for sharing this beautifully eloquent offering. Love and peace to you. Regis

The soul of your poetry seems indigenous to regions of creative consciousness and spiritual vitality that few souls, like angels, dare to tread. Even more than making a gift of its own beauty, this poem does a tremendous service to the denizens of schilderswijk, a word and a people with which I was unfamiliar until now.

Wow, *Schilderswijk* is an intense drama cleverly crafted with beautiful word play. I am so impressed that you can write such beauty in two vastly different languages. :)
