The Firebird sings

In every night's candle

Bathing in the attar of your garden

My heart rejoices in the flame

Of its extinction

Ya Mawlat Shukriya

Ya Sheikha Shukriya

Prophetess of my spirit's union

With the Divine

With my origin in your longing

Your forehead is the ka'ba

In your presence my heart knows

Nothing

But devotion

On your altar

Burn the incenses

Of Shari'a and Tariqa

Had I no witness

Who saw you

As I saw you

Were not my eye and my heart

The fruits of your soil

I would have doubted

Your existence

Is it a sin when I pour you a libation

Of my own blood?

Is it a deceit when I say

No one knows you but I?

No one knows me

But you

Is it assuming then to say:

Sunnah and Fard--

That is you and I

My Islam, o Beloved

Are you

What do I care

About martyrdom

What do I fear

To be martyred

What is asceticism

And what sensual pleasure

What is the law

And what its violation

Is not all one:

The hand, the stone

And HE WHO throws it

Or SHE

And its flight

That cannot reach

Its goal?

This seeks no answer

In perception

Nor can judgement defy it

Or image depict it

For the Essence

Is the Essence

And nothing else

And everything between

As falcon's and sea gull's wing

Rest in the air

We shall not fall

For our flight, too

Is

To rest in the air

Between sky and earth

As we belong to both and neither

Neither shall reattain the other

Allah's beauty has conquered

These hearts

Without a move
