Three BIrds On a Wire

This happened yesterday during my walk.

Three birds
were perched
on a telephone wire
clicking a message
I knew was for me
I couldn't decipher
morse code
and remembered
my brother loved Edison
Made a receiver
from copper wire
and tapped out time
Became a drummer
and the beat goes on
He's wild on the highline
a base walks in tandem
while that receiver
gathers dust in the attic

Three birds were perched
on a telephone wire
Those three birds flew
in a circle above me
so free I felt the air
from their wings
and they lighted back down
Three times they flew
in a circle above me
and lighted back down
I said under my breath,

"Yes, I must learn to fly,
  but I need someone
  to help me"

The three birds sat still
message received

Two birds
were perched
low on a locust tree limb
screaming a message
I knew was for me
I couldn't understand
and remembered
as a five year old
when the house
was being painted
I picked up a coffee can
of turpentine to smell it
Swallowed some by accident
Everyone was too busy
to hear my panic
I had the sense to drink milk
if only to remove that taste
from my mouth

Two birds were perched
low on a locust tree limb
Those two birds
cried in concern
In a field surrounded
by chain-link fence
a young bird
had fallen from the nest
She flapped her clumsy wings
and was lifted two feet
above the ground
then plopped to earth
My first instinct
was to try to save her
I couldn't traverse the barrier
I said in a mother's voice,

"You better learn to fly
  and you'd better learn quick!"

Those two birds perched
even lower on a locust tree limb
screamed a warning
not to interfere
I walked away knowing
somethings are better left
to their own devices

Birds. Lovely. Powerfully symbolic. Thank you for sharing this gift, Lin. Love and peace to you,

I especially like this poem because of my love for birds. I think they do give us messages -- when we feed them and when we walk into their territory. Happens every day. Enjoyable read. R

A wise and gorgeous transcription of a very powerful conversation between nature and the soul of the poet. Not everyone recognizes such signs and voices or knows how to interpret them when they do, much less construct such great poetry out of them. Enjoyed this very much. And enjoyed as well your work in the new BLUEPRINT.

Yes somtimes non interference is the best help we can give someone, perhaps this could even be applied to some of the poitcal decisions of the last few years concerning wars in foreign lands.

Yup...Birds are divine messengers for sure Linda..
There is a time to observe and leave well alone,.... however there is also a time to observe and intervene..
Intuition is the key !

I don't know about all that "receiving messages," but I do believe that this song was a metaphor for life, and a damn good one at that.

Lin I do believe you received the message in these incidents. I agree that Birds are God's messengers, in fact Creator uses much of His creation to send messages if only we would listen to the Divine Spirit, that is within all of Creation. Great poemm you tell it so beautifully!

Many believe that birds are divine messengers, and this is quite a powerful piece, Linda.
