We shipped out in "no pain"
drunk disorderly screwed
the haze lifted
by the time sworn in
We returned in various states
no pain--dead
constant pain--body busted
mind twisted beyond control
Some came thru pretty well
seemingly sound
joined the Legion
ran for public office
These will be honored
held up to public view
even worshiped, like Ike
and they will prepare the next batch
Small boys and girls
will look up yearning
to serve their country
ready to ship out in the next war.

How true - and we truly need to start honoring and paying more attention to those that didn't come back so well - our VA hospitals and homeless shelters are overflowing with them and their heartbreaking stories - and they receive very little attention at all.
