You are so right Barbie as a parent of three and now a grandparent of four more I have learned so much from the children in my life. Just a few of the things I learned were tolerence, patience, forgiveness, learned to get over prejudices and I learned to love unconditionally. Thanks for sharing your view with us.

A fabulous setting-out of well-considered and considerate thoughts, Barbie. I wonder just how many of us reading your wise and kindly exhortations are well-experienced in the kinds of childhood "quashings" you speak of here? Many, I would wager. To a lesser or greater degree. But I have recently read somewhere - perhaps even in a comment here on AD! - that to be told to "sit down, shut up and do as I say" is the most damaging to a child's development in terms of self-knowledge, self-esteem and understanding of personal sovereignty growing into independence, so it seems to me that parents need to be educated not only in the physical needs of care and control, but of emotional necessities as well. Many of us only learn to crawl out of our shells much later on in life when many lessons should already have been learned. I have a theory that we are ALL 3-yr old children underneath our adult masks... a kinda scary thought, depending on how we were treated at that age!! You have such empathy in your soul. You are so absolutely right Barbara. Children are definitely our greatest gifts! They love unconditionally, with an absolute absence of bias. I believe the world would be a much better place if we "really" observed this little miracles. Great job Barbara.

but love, accept, and try to understand

My children and grand children mean the world to me
I always try to give them advice but never push, for if they are anything like me they will bolt in the other direction LOL

Hi Barbara.I enjoy reading this poem.I want to express that it is so important for parents to support and love their children unconditionally.Children are individuals and they have every right to achieve their goals just like anybody else.I can honestly say that we live in a society where an older person should learn anything from a young person simply because of age and that is bs.Old people can learn so much from children regardless of age.Its like people who are senior citzens have this arrogance that just because they are 50 or 70 years older than a young man or woman means that they are better and they know everything which is not the case.

Parents have this reputation of living through their children and they need to understand that their child is not a puppet so to speak.The number one thing that a child wants is not a million dollars or an I-Pod.All they want is for their parents to love them unconditionally and accept them for who they are.Unconditional love is indeed the greatest love of all.Take care of yourself.
