At Christmas I sent a card to a young man in a prison work camp. This is a part of a letter I recently received from him. It brought tears to my eyes to know that such a small endeavor could bring so much happiness to a shattered soul. His letter touched my heart. I wanted to share some of it with you.

I do not know you personally MaryGrace, but I've known of you. Florence Nightengale, Joan of Arc, Mother Thersa. I've read and known of since I could recognize sentences and just as your name sake who bore our precious Lord, you have the heart of legands.

I've had a rough life. I've survived many hard times. I stand neither casting blame nor pointed fingers for any of it.I have taken the hand I was delt and played it the best way I thought I could. If I could express any regrets, its because I was too trusting. Trying to learn from hard expierences, I quit believing in people a long time ago.

A life time of events passed by, each depositing another layer around a hardened heart. Finally 1000 miles away from anyone I knew, standing alone in America's cess pit, tired forlorn and battling cancer while surrounded by vile contemptious individuals,I met a friend, your son.

Friend is not a word I use lightly, for I can count those who have been my friends on one hand. Some say its a sad thing for a man of 34 years, but I just always considered it wise. I lost my family more than twenty years ago when I was still a teen.

One lonely evening, my name was called for mail. I did not know who would be sending me something. I returned to my steel bunk holding a card in my hand. It was the first one I had received in five years. I knew from the address that your sons stories were not fairy tales!

You gave me something that day that I never exspected to want again. I speak not of the tears I've shed for there have been a great many, some a welcome respite.

I had stopped believing in heros and heroines long ago.
Now I know they are real, for I have glimpsed you and met your son. You true ly are a special kind of people!
Thanks and God bless you. From OZ

Hi Mary,

People don't know how they impact an individual in what is so seemingly a small way. Thank you for sharing this...

What a stirring story!

Indirectly Oz speaks for all of us, for who among us have not experienced the depth of pain as he has experienced.

I recently read in a book: "When you are scared and in a panic, you are alone. The world at best is indifferent at best and hostile at worst." Your letter broke that chain for one young man, and by reaching out to him you touched his life and perhaps gave a lift to his spirit that was desperately needed.

Sad, yet beautiful and most definitely sincere.
