Humnankind has always been at war, sometimes in small parts of the world, sometimes across the world itself. In the past, the goals were limited in purpose and the end of a war arrived, even if it took a hundred years. Now our conflicts seem spread over the globe. They have intensified and expand in scope. Territory, resources and religion have long been matters of contention. To them have been added demands about cultures, harder to define and vaguer in purpose. There seems to be no end in sight to the spreading amorphous coflict, even as the purposes of conflict seem harder to pin down. Meanwhile we lose sight of human-wide issues of real consequence. most of all a common and threatened environment. Are we intelligent enough to find a way forward without mutual destruction? Change had gifted us new and powerful tools, but will we use them for constructive resolution or will we continues to use them as fuel for a conflict in which humankind is the ultimate victim?

         Intelligent Life

So here we are, all of us:

Midway up the mountain we call progress,

Overcrowding a circular trail that girds it.

In the past we’ve been able to think about

And build imaginative ways upward.

Now just hanging on saps all our energy.

Once, only favored individuals, clans,

Nations, religions could climb this high.

Now, thanks to colonies and markets.

Shrunken distances and a webbed globe,

The narrow trail is suddenly crammed.

Everyone wants on, now - or soon enough.

And why not? That’s what the favored promised

As they warred, invested and asked for emulation.

Once, if the uppity got to near to their heels

The barons tossed them back where they belonged.

Now the excluded climb to the trail knowing

The connection between aspirations and weapons:

They bring their tunnels and their doctrines with them.

What goes unnoticed is that salvation and status

Count less than mutual destruction:

Both offense and defense tear chunks

Off the edges that rim the common trail.

Humankind’s perch becomes precarious

Constricted by multiplying manifold dangers.

We will never know what’s at the top

Of the mountain until we get there.

We can dream of equality for all,

Of the return of benign sovereigns, of

Handmaidens aplenty or unending football.

But we’ll never find out if we destroy ourselves

Before we can climb to the answers.

Sure, solutions are tough. All the more reason

To enlist everyone in building the trail upward.

That would be the intelligent choice. And besides

The way things are going, it’s the only one.

Aw, come on, you say: That’s weak idealism.

We’re talking about the real world.

Okay, I say, have a real look around.

If this is where exclusion has brought us,

We’d be better off with something else.

How about pragmatic mutual interest,

Even working with those beneath us?

Can you think of anything with better odds?

Lots of poetic food for thought. With man things are impossible but with God all things are possible. However, even in the books of the Bible man has always been at war. Will man ever learn? I doubt it...

Disregarding the fact that, on several meaningful parameters and not the sensational news stories, that the year 2013 was the best year ever for citizens of the world, your poem certainly brings attention to all of the maladies humankind needs to address… and soon.

The challenge is to bring all of these "intelligent" minds together on a single purpose and may be one of the life-threatening possible disasters awaiting in the wings will bring us to our senses to fight the good fight instead of each other.

There may be something brewing in Iceland right now that will get the world's attention in a big way.

This is a political treatise that deals with the China issue from a completely new perspective. Disparaging as he may sound, from page to page, toward "the old system" and the Communist Party's various wiles, the author demonstrates his mysteriously
