God Says She is the Outfit

when they
came to get
her, they were
dressed in civilization's
frock, black cloth and silver
buttons, red stay in the collar,
not white,

it was
about the
time cottonwoods
leaf, when bluegills
were moving from their
deep water winter sanctuaries
to the shallow of lakes and ponds,

they came in
on an all-mare
hitch of spotted
pinto draft horses,

God says she
is the outfit that
holds the glue together,

she stayed in
his good graces with
her vintage horse-drawn
road grader conditioning
God's road, they broke bread
and shared those times around
the campfire,

the burros
watched her
run for her dictionary
when poetry built the
harness, and the pick
and ax told how she did
it a hundred years ago when
the Madam's carriage transported
prostitution's nicknames, Lola, Molly,
Hazel, Maymie and Pearl DeVere,

God says
she is the outfit.

Sage, I did not believe your poetry could possibly be more powerful and entertaining than your last several poems. Yet, each time I read the latest, you have surpassed the mastery of the previous one. This fabulous story you have told here blazes a trail for me between western/Indian lore and a Zane Gray novel. I love it. I sense a touch of some of the enduring qualities of Mickey Newberry's, "San Francisco's Mable Joy". A song whose lyrics have always touched a special compassionate tone in me. My thanks for sharing this very special rendering. May you always know love peace and joy my friend. Jon Michael
