Coward's Crossing

the coyote
thought it could
not enter heaven
without all parts of
its body, some went
fifty miles out of their
way to avoid the traps,

forbidden land
Coward's Crossing
on the Nez Perce, old
and bent now, the crone
isn't deaf, she hears the clicking
of hammers of repeating rifles and
scripture quoting for the eternal ride
to hereafter, she be ramblin' on,

Flatheads, Crows,
and Shoshone tied
their fallen to Nez Perce
ponies, and out of nowhere
Shakiah appeared, the woman
of old spirit, a medicine woman who
was polished in the art of staying alive
in the wilderness,

in her heavy
sheepskin coat,
Shakiah crossed
at Coward's Crossing
way ahead of the latter-day
arrivals, she saw reason to see
shadow of a knotted noose around
his neck for the rest of the days...and
so it was,

taught by nature
the coyote ran an
insignificant speck
over the high rimrock
cliff,

sage through
the ways of life
to the ways of survival
in this rugged landscape
where she will live ramblin'
on in the remaining quarter-century
of her life.

Nothing but admiration for this piece, Sage. Patrick

It took me three attempts to get up the courage to read this:-) This to me reminds of the ugly downside to American westward expansion. George Carlin once said: "America is a double-standard. It was founded by white slave owners who threw off their British white-slave owners so that they could be free to own their black slaves and push westward killing red people, brown people and finally drop atom bombs on yellow people!" I'm paraphrasing; but it was something to that effect. This poem is sad but ever so necessary as it so brilliantly illustrates how attuned to nature the indigenous peoples of this country were and are and how the armies of the Serpent Brotherhood (they're all of the same bloodlines) lay to waste any and all who stand in the way of their dark ambitions. Excellent poetry. Love the Allman Brothers tune as well. That was always one of my favorites!!

...for me, Sage, an account of a free way of life before intruders and invaders, before land fell to outsiders.

Love this piece - has something of the rhythms of the traditional cultures it speaks about. I also like the choice of line length down the page - adds to the overall flow of the poem - likewise the lack of capitals.

Good story, there is a definite 'life' issue here.

Feels like a sad old west saga. Damn lucky coyote. "polished in the art of staying alive" is a great line!

Peace and warm whiskey from my flask,
Dayvid
