Scars

creosote bush
hid the horse from
the quirt

steeple flanks
bordering on sin
valley hushed

horseflesh whipped
wounds ooze paid in full
Sunday tithes

one year later
long hair covers
scars heal

horse pulls
buckboard to church
bell rings four times

those who
wronged us
stand up to our scars

The sins of the church leave deep scars. And it hardly ever learns. Very moving poem Sage!

Scars are sometimes invisible to the naked eye, but not the keen mind.

Another great write, my dear Sage!

chiseled flesh
stone washed scars
out of the darkness
empowering voices
where the wounds never sleep

hollows toil
pealing bells...

Look Away Silence by Edward Patterson

Martin Powers wanted an ironing board for Christmas. Instead, he got . . . Matthew Kieler, a non-returnable gift, but a gift that kept on giving. A powerful tale of survival, compassion and unapologetic love in the time of AIDS.
