Jett takes down the painting of Jebediah and looks at the saloon crowd, those men dribbling tobacco juice down their chins, the whole dirty lot of them. She hangs a new picture of a naked harlot with a wide smile between her legs.
JETT DURANGO
Jebediah Winfield was a vile testicle that lost one at the whorehouse. Go on over to Vera’s and look on the nut wall. His is there with a nail driven through it.
Calamity Jane walks in. She’s half-drunk and loud, carrying a bottle of whiskey.
CALAMITY JANE
I say goddammit did Lulu Fisk ride me with a generous streak over at the whorehouse! F***in’ comer an’ when it was over, she shaved her business an’ gave it to me for a souvenir. Jett, she your woman? If so, she’s whorin’ her past mighty hard. What about it, Jett?
JETT DURANGO
Jane, Lulu Fisk has my permission. When you’re sober maybe I’ll tell you how Lulu Fisk and I met, hell, it’s one of the most intriguing riddles of western history.
CALAMITY JANE
Jett, one night I was so scared that you was maybe turnin’ the other way, if you know what I mean, that I picked up a copy of the Powder River Hymnals an’ read aloud the one you wrote about the beehive and that prick you shot off that son of a bitch and tossed it to stop the posse.
JETT DURANGO
Jane, I’m not turnin’ the other way. I want my women to love women in a way that a man can’t. Go get a bath. There’l be a pair of clean pants and a shirt waiting for you. I’ll have the mercantile send them over. And next time you see Lulu Fisk, ask her to give you the Durango—she’ll know what it means.
