She Is One of the Spectators

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Saturday, November 5, 2005

She's half dreamy and shy
lost in a theatre:
drunk, intoxicated by cheer,
negligently looking at us.

She's waiting for her arrival
surveying the scene,
waiting for the lights to go down
and the lights on the stage to come up
for the illusion to begin.

She's watched by inquisitive eyes:
taking bearings, noting unexpected alliances,
and generating gossips.

Her companion surveys the auditorium
with his opera glasses
in search of recognized faces,
of friends, of desirable unknowns...
What more could he want!

A poem of interior reflections that dazzle and seduce. Particularly enjoy that it may represent a literal setting or a symbolic one. Nice indeed.

This is fascinating, Calvin, and presents for me quite a theatrical conundrum; who "she" is, being both spectator and centre of attraction. You have penned most captivatingly of the atmosphere generated within the theatre setting: that of the on-stage action being only, perhaps, a small part of the "world of the stage" which we all seem to enter when we participate in its realms. I love all the unspoken dynamics and interactions of this piece; the observations, the sense of anticipation. A very engaging poem which, as all good poetry should, leaves unsaid more than 50%. And a last line to die for, which begs another stage completely! Tight on punctuation, but, like you said on Wilde somewhere, we DO make very definite and conscious decisions about them... on that basis, personally I would have put commas afer line 1 and line 5 too, but maybe I'm just totally OTT.! :))

You've captured the scene very well. Being an old theater person I could see and fell the anticipation building through pre-show moments.
