Buying Cultures

A Repost

A work in progress

Open to Advanced Critiques

Tuesday, November 22, 2005

They met at the foyer
leading to the auditorium,
before a lecture.
(A gentleman was about to talk
on the fracture defects.)

Her first week as a transfer student
        at Cornel was passing well.
        He was enjoying her company,
first just as a source of fantasy
and then something mistaken and elusive.

They met after fifteen years
at a shopping complex, in Ithaca!

She was with her Indian boyfriend,
whom he knew from school.
They had a round of beer, and then parted.

Now he wonders why she would
always take him to buy Patchouli,
       Silk Kurta and Herbal mixtures…
       (whenever he showed interest
for Hollywood movies and rock concerts.)

I too remember this and found it very interesting, and excellent. In the last verse,I detected a hint of bias from the first man. Am I wrong? It seems to play an important part to me.

I really like the structure in this work and the inconsequential nature in the text reminds me very much of T.S. Elliot. I would love to see more of this work...excellent poem.

hey Debs. possessing no advanced critique, I could be flippant and say, yeah, what he said to Jude or Ed... in an attempt to say something original and praying it won't fall into the void of the meaningless, I'll say this much: two things interest me about "Buying Cultures" - the happenstance tied to a sense of time and place and second the "mistaken and elusive" reference which seems to be echoed in the last lines of cultures clashing or cultures used to control. my mumbo jumbo review aside, I like the detail and want to know some more about the poet and the ideas he shares. it appears that life's design is superimposed with seemingly inconsequential events that are interfused within each other as life plays itself out ...

excellent poem, Debs ... captures the mystery of the ongoing moment ...

I found this poem fascinating the first time I read it, Debashish, and I still do. And I think we all wonder about things that are too elusive for us to completely grasp or understand.
