Peeling an Orange

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Peeling an orange,
      an extended image,
           a few old poems,
a box of metaphors, a cache
                       of adjectives and adverbs,
        a verb: reading
              morning newspaper.

A couple takes on three robbers,
movie star jailed for killing Black Bucks,
                killer drivers absconding,
                    two pages of alabaster skin
                           advertising skin creams,
                                a cache of adjectives
on Bush, Blair, Saddam and Osama,
          Sonia playing her trump cards,
                                       Manmohan the puppet,
          Kalam, the great president,
Dr Putin? He cheated, say scholars,
          Hizb chief Salahuddin
                              surfaces in public in Pak.
                     A morning newspaper,
                          a half peeled orange,
                              an extended image,
                                   a box of metaphors.

Beware! You could be googled,
search engines judge you.

         Ambani resigned from Rajya Sabha,
              walked fluorescent underground arcades,
                   riding crocodile elevator,
spoke to media in bubble words,
                                  flowery bubbling words,
                                        about accountable accounts.
                   A morning newspaper,
a cache of adjectives and adverbs
                                         smoked, sprayed and perspired.

Bollywood has a blast at the games,
Celluloid beauties have MCG in Thrall.
British rising star, who is rising
                       for ten years, Henman, dumps
                  Hewitt, Clijsters falls to Craybas.
Last two pages cover advertisements,
            begging, fricken advertisements,
                    smelly, enameled, glossy advertisements.
No news on genocide in Africa,
no column on jail tortures in Iraq.
   An extra supplement, opportunities,
        inform MNC job openings,
             consultants faking resumes,
                  window dress dreams.
        A morning newspaper,
            an extended image,
                 a few stitched poems,
                   a pair of metaphors,
a pack of adjectives and adverbs,
                             a lighter.

What a light-bearer you are, Debs! Strike the match and let the whole thing become a torch to incinerate the dross, and to become a beacon on the pinnacle of vision to aspire to. You peeled this in one deft move, but I wonder if the fractured peelings, falling elsewhere, would have made any more actual sense? I doubt it... Like newspapers these days... who cares which one or what page?! It all amounts to the same thing. Clever write. TY Kate xx

Political, social, and aesthetic commentary all rolled into one fat juicy metaphorical orange of a read. It's because we've become too apathetic that we fail to squeeze lemons harder and make better sweeter lemonade out of the numerous bitter truths surrounding us these days. Superb work Mr. Haar.

to think that life can be encompassed by such banality, and yet, the truest truths lie in the must mundane details. loved the various references, even though i didn't get most of them, the piece made me want to pull up google and get to work!
