Under a Lamplight

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Sunday, May 14, 2006

Waiting ten years under a lamplight
her youth slowly trickled away,
when he returned she’d turned gray.
She recalls the moment, the delight,

when he smiled at her on the way
to the university library, he thought
she was someone else; it brought
two strangers--an affair, a few days--

something that seemed like love;
she loved him, if that’s the word,
thinking him other than what he was.

Mistaken all the while, from the curl of
first smile; there’s no exchange of words--
eyes pierce each other, sleeves brush.

(if crowded there’s an occasional touch)

This reveals a sad but universal theme, Debs. Thank you for sharing your gift. Love and peace,

this has a spark and flair of that that could be so much more. This made me think of my series of two people who fate keep bringing together. Stupendous my friend!

often the intimacies of love can become isolated by the passage of time, the propsects of false hope and mislead perceptions ... the fabric of "Under a Lamplight" exposes such an experience quite vividly ...

The confusion and ambiguity are so evident in this write, Debs. You have said much in few deceptively straightforward and narrative lines. This poem begs more questions than it seeks to answer... if any! Just elicits a sigh from me cos I can appreciate how, for dreamers, much can be built on even a misconstrued smile... and even more on one that is not even intended for you!! Two character sketches turned into psychological portraits by your skilled hands. TY Kate xx BTW thank you so much for your wonderful commendation! :))

Somethings are just never meant to be and others simply for a moment. Sometimes we cling to a memory and to the way we thought things were, never realizing our misconception of reality. It is sad that she waited and held on to something that never really was and in doing so wasted the best years of her life. Nice work, Debs.
Take care,
Sherry

This really gets across the feeling of two ships passing in the night, so to speak. I admired your form in this- at first I wanted to keep switching the lines around in the first verse, but as I read on, I could see how the form worked and the last verse was beautiful.
