Billboard Girl

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Monday, June 12, 2006

She shows
her fiberglass hair,
double-edged tongue,
pierced at odd places.

She has a body,
a mind, a gleaming
necklace, a silk dress
that reveals more
than it hides.

She looks pale behind
dark glasses, her lips crack
like black-cotton soil
when she forgets,
popping pills.

the billboard girl symbolizes the modern age through some choice imagery ...

"her lips crack
like black-cotton soil"

this is a million dollar metaphor (simile? i always get them mixed up.) you have delivered a social commentary in 14 lines that scholars struggle to encapsulate in a thousand pages. brilliant.

I am Godmother to a billboard girl... Hmmm... where did I go wrong??!! :)) Thankfully, it is her bubbly personality that shines out and for which she is chosen for many of the things she advertises. But yes... indeed, the "ravished"-look popular with creating that essential "hunger to consume" the product being pushed comes at an all too-high price for those who are branded with its mark. Being thought of as "merchandise" is cheap but comes with expensive and often unhealthy tastes... Neat write, Debs. And nothing more sad than when the posters start to rip and sag off the hoardings like yesterdays discarded newspapers. You've caught it all... especially the mind-numbing. TY Kate xx

Beautifully sad. I have lived that life, though never on a billboard, thank gods.

Billboards! Another medium for advertising and I know it well. The superficial gal on the board is much of what men want their "Ideal Woman" to be. It never measures up, does it?

I love your creativity here.
