This poem was posted on The Poets Nest as a competition poem.
It consisted writing a fictinal poem/prose about the woman in the portrait.
Sadly, The Poet Nest are no more active and I wish all of you to read my submission.

Poem Artwork

The magnolia trees were in full blooming
when we paraded in front of General Lee,
before heading north, to Pennsylvania
at the beginning of May eighteen sixty-thre.

Promoted to Major, I looked around the stands
and there, my beautyful magnolia was she,
a hat with a feather keeping away the sun
from her lovely face, but not from her lips.

Being from the home-town of Mark Twain,
I had almost forgotten Hannibal, Missouri,
because a beauty from Savannah, Georgia,
a Southern Belle, heartily accepted me.

Her eyes, over a swan's neck, followed as I
rode past, following the flag of the proud Dixie,
with my heart bursting when her smile promised
a farewell out of this world, a night on Big Easy.

My Lovely Belle, a wife, a lover and a friend, that
for years and years waited among magnolia trees,
for my sword to return with honor and glory, after
the Gettysburg Battle, in June of eighteen sixty-three.

Reviewed on June 7, 2007

This poem is one to be recited to Phoebus in honor of the nine MUSES...
"My Southern Belle" bears the aroma of magnolias and the scent of art.

May Mother Poet drop dews of grace over the prairies of your evergreen creative existence.

In admiration,

Georg

Gives me a chill this one. So many gone there never to return. Wonderful thoughts emanating from that picture. I'd love to know how others saw her.
