The squirrels’ excited chatter
The acorns falling down
Come at the end of summer
When leaves begin to brown

And Mother calls us early
And day’s end comes too fast
The squirrels all store their acorns
The lake grows still as glass

The early peaceful twilight brings
A certain dying too
No more our lazy rambles
Beneath the sky’s bright blue

We pick up books and new-bought clothes
And march amidst the cool
While Patches wags his tail goodbye
It’s off again to school.
