civic building
across the street
everyday they raise the flag
today I caught it
saw them hoist
the flag of the United States of America
saw the tiny jerks
felt them in my throat
thinking of the thousands
just doing their job
in the sand
half a world away
this weekend someone made a wrong
turn
in that hell of a sandpit
someone jigged instead of jagged
and paid
and I screamed at the man
across the street
stop stop right there
leave that flag
half staff
just leave it right there
don’t you
dare
move it an inch
and right then that flag unfurled
and my heart broke
for
the men and women
putting it on the line
all of it
in that hell of a sandpit
halfway cross the world
damn it to hell anyway

WOW.
The giant flags waving at the car dealerships have numbed me to the real meaning of our stars and stripes. This poem brings it all back home, to the heart. Long may she wave.
