A Slight Itching of the Conscience

I'm online at last - major netwok upgrade going on for my ISP - grabbed this from the top of my unpublished list.
While we are all bothering about Iraq or wallowing in plenty we should not forget the long standing problems that still exist in the rest of the world......

The image on my T.V. screen

depicts a little boy walking along a dusty track.

matchtick limbs, bloated belly

protruding bones tell me

the familiar story.

sad, brown eyes,large in

a face to defeated to plead,

reed like arms

reach towards me

in personal accusation.

And I settle

more comfortably in my chair,

eat another piece of chocolate

and resolve to send a cheque

next week — .maybe.

Hmmm, well, hmmmm! I do think that I would rather send a few dollars! If only a few cents of it went to the child, then I would be so very happy! Because that would be a few cents more than the kid had previously! I'd prefer to send the money rather than spend it on junk food, vices and lots of other wasteful, meaningless, unnecessary things that I do/buy constantly and I don't even blank at twice about doing so! This is just the way I feel, of course, but I would feel glad that I gave! Hehehe, often, just as your poem said, I intent to, but I forget to send the check!

Hi Ian, you did the right thing to go on eating your chocolate. Not because that poor child does not deserve help, no, no, no. But because like Elizabeth said, make sure whatever you do is for the person you are doing it for and not some greedy person who is feeding off the sympathy factor. I like causes that either give the impoverished tools or teaching them something they can then use to improve their lives with, like the heifer project.

Ah yes, Ian.. If problems were solved just because we care, there would be none.. You've held up a gruesome picture, reality, but I also applaud your bravery in showing us the honesty in your last lines. We do what we can.. mostly, alas, we simply care. Well said. katy.

A suffering child definitely tugs at the heartstrings and forces us to re-evaluate. Touching write.

Those are sad, sad pictures. If you are going to donate, make sure ALL the money goes to the kids and families, and not to line prime-time preachers pockets. Thoughtful work.
