Ice Cream and Chips?

The poem is not about disgusting food choices but the Politically Correct society and how it is destroying working and middle class society. Corporate fascism rules and the milk of human kindness turns sour.

Walking hand in hand to the picture show,
Father and daughter's weekly treat.
"Would you like Ice - Cream at the interval"
he would always ask, "or we can stop
and get chips from the shop to eat
as we make our way home."
BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH.

Ice Cream was tempting, cold and sweet
but waiting for chips would extend the day.
Ice cream was now, when the movie was done
the day was gone. Chips hot from the fryer,
lipsmackingly fatty, fingerlickingly tasty
would satisfy for hours.
AND YOU WANTED BOTH

The lights had gone down before you
made up your mind. And then you
realised you'd wanted ice cream.
How it would hurt when on the way home
the shop was in darkness, doors bolted shut.
You had fallen for tightwad's trick again.
BUT ONE DAY YOU'D HAVE BOTH

When you looked for love in the arms of a man
you found some would provide a secure life,
others excited, delighted, eventually betrayed.
The affectionate caring and sensitive ones
Were impractical, lazy and weak
The ones who were strong and good with
Their hands, took their anger out on your face
BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE IT ALL

When I offered love and a packet of goodies
it was yours with no strings attached.
You could ride expensive cars, eat
in the best restaurants and look down
on those girls who relied on ugly men
for their luxuries. Later at home
When only kisses decorated your cheeks
I would love you and hold you all night.
BUT YOU STILL WANTED MORE

I let you undress me, you tried to possess me
whatever I gave was never enough
I would have given you Ice Cream and Chips
You could have had Cola and Candy
You could have had control of your own life
And a permanent place in mine
BUT NOBODY WILL GIVE UP THEIR SOUL

Did you ever get your Ice Cream and chips?
Did you ever find a love who could give
excitement, passion AND security,
a place in the sun and a seat in the shade.
A remote control man who would at
your whim change channels or ...
DID YOU LEARN TO COMPROMISE ?

A fun, lively poetic rebuke to an annoying ex girlfriend. I wonder if you ever said this to her, or wish you said it afterwards... either way, a fun read.

Sara.

Excellent structure and great images, Ian. Make mine with malt vinegar, please!

Compromise is the cornerstone on every relationship. Right above the foundation.

Oh my mouth is salivating after reading this. I suppose it is the prospect of salt laden chips drenched in ketchup, followed by ice cream.

Very masterfully written Ian. Thanks,
~ Sara
