In my sixty four plus years of living I have witnessed many a surprise

Some of which made me pinch myself for I couldn’t believe my eyes

There were times when I was caught unawares when my child took his first step

Or when she said her first word and I was flabbergast and simply wept

There were things that made me laugh so hard I couldn’t catch my breath

And  there is that near-miss while driving that served to leave me speechless

Of course I was overwhelmed when I first met my wife

I walked up and asked her to dance; she said “yes” and changed my life

Not all surprises in my life left me happy or feeling pleased

Some were hard to take but looking back I see why I weathered these

I learned from mistakes I made and grew stronger spiritually

I feel that I have improved, and I like to think with more stable personality

The outcome of many of these things did not leave me feeling delighted

But I learned I brought them on myself because I was shortsighted

So I simply weigh the good with the bad and I have come to this conclusion

All things work for the good of those who love the Lord and this is my revelation
