Hero
A hero doesn't blindly follow,
old men's call for war.
Where happenstance and blind chance,
thrust foolhardiness to the fore.
There is no real heroism,
in glorifying acts of war.
Giving great honor for,
unleashing death and gore.
When one puts on a uniform,
and is paid to do dangerous work.
There is no heroism in an accident,
on a path where death does lurk.
Sorrow certainly overcomes us,
when we lose a coworker or friend.
To call the unfortunate a hero,
does nothing to help the family mend.
A hero is someone who,
stands up for what is right.
Heroes often face the wrath,
of those who hold the might.
A hero is someone who,
helps whenever there is a need.
Doesn't flee with fear and loathing,
regardless of race, color or creed.
A hero is a person who,
gives more than they ever take.
Leaves this world a better place,
for what they do or make.
A hero is a role model,
for all that come behind.
For a lifetime of accomplishment,
than a single act of blind.
For there would go you or I,
if a tragedy befell us by and by.
A hero for a happenstance?
Not me, not you, then why?

As for our soldiers, I greatly admire the courage they display in fullfilling their military duties. But I think it was just as courageous for those young people who moved from the U.S. to Canada in order to avoid fighting an unjust war in Viet Nam. They gave up their citizenship amd most contact with their families for this, and the majority called them cowards.
Meanwhile, we refuse to learn the lessons from Viet Nam and Korea. We send our kids to the Middle East and who knows where to next. We do it for the "domino theory" or to engage in "Nation building." We take these beautiful children, damaged or dead, and call them heroes. As if that makes it all right.

I'm totally in awe of those who don military uniforms and give their life in the knowledge of possible or actual death. But I'm increasingly of the view that the mobilisation of force and the escalation of arms is achieving nothing and sacrificing too much. Besides, it's beyond hideous and embarrassing the battles we choose to field and those we choose to ignore. Please God, let's create a world where, as you say, we will be remembered for our lives of service and not for our deaths in line of so-called duty. xx
Without intending to apply any sickly sentiments, you are my kind of hero in the way you try to cope with what life has thrown at you...
Heroes come in many forms, some are activated quietly whilst other are thrust into its limelight by force of circumstance.
There are few who would choose the accolade of “Dead Hero” in preference to life.
There is nothing heroic about someone sitting in a command bunker firing missiles in the direction of an unarmed civilian population.
Then having the audacity to call the ensuing result “Collateral Damage” It is time that those particular heroes were in fact downgraded to a more suitable descriptive noun.
