Dying leaves like shadows rattle gently in the breeze
Skeletal fingers of a dying season in the sunlight’s fade
Without mercy, birds of prey lurk amongst the trees
Spurs and talons so much sharper than the sharpest blade
Lunatics howled with the wind a fortnight ago, maddened by the moon
Now that cruel, indifferent orb has waned and disappeared into the sky
But as surely as life morphs unto death, for too many, far too soon
That lunar beacon will beckon those whom it tortures as it burns into their eyes
In the darkness of the new moon on the ground, coyotes like banshees howl
A cacophony of hellish yodeling wafts to mock me on the wind
Hair stands on my arms and the back of my neck as they sing and prowl
Please, please forgive me Father I have sinned
In that darkness stars, galaxies and nebulae burn and scorch my eyes
As I stare back beyond the Beginning, I stand stunned and know I am but a wart
On the bunger of the Universe, but I don’t know why I am surprised
Perhaps I had always thought that I, myself, was the universal port
Amen
