I often find myself these days in a daydream state with thoughts floating around my mind that need to be captured and put into form.

Poem Artwork

Fleeting Whim

Gone with a Whim

Thoughts come upon me,

quickly these days.

Like smoke in a daydream,

indistinct in the haze.

I capture them sometimes,

and hold on fast.

To create an idea meantime,

and hope that it lasts.

A story may emerge,

a poem or a joke.

I dare not tarry.

I dare not choke.

For these whims of fancy,

are flighty at best.

Will be gone in an instant,

if I let them rest.

So I take up my pen,

figuratively, that is.

And jot down the thought,

before it goes, fizz.

Like the carbon dioxide,

escaping an abandoned Coke.

Like a mystery unraveling,

still hidden under a cloak.

So I scooped this one up,

before my eyes grow dim.

And captured it, before,

it was gone with a whim.

Isn't it frustrating how quickly one's muse can retract a great idea?

WELL, I GUESS FROM ONE POINT OF VIEW, SOME THOUGHTS HAVE TO BE 'CAPTURED' OR THEY WILL FLY IN AND OUT, AS YOU SAID, LIKE A WHIM. AND THEY FLY OFF TO ANOTHER MIND THAT MAY OR MAY NOT CATCH THEM...AND IT GOES ON UNTIL THE THOUGHT IS CAUGHT AND PUT ON PAPER. BUT IN MY WAY OF THINKING, BECAUSE I THINK NOTHING HAPPENS BY CHANCE, THE INSPIRATION GOES TO EXACTLY WHO IT WAS INTENDED FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE. JUST ANOTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT IT...YOU KNOW HOW I AM, RON(SMILE). THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

For sure, night or day, when the words come, if not penned, they go as quickly as they came! Glad you have a swift pen! Enjoyed!

It may sound funny, but you have the right idea of how to make use of thoughts as they come to mine. Take care and continue writing, Ron!

Thoughts are fleeting these days. Refusing to be caught. The computer of my brain has slowed down from its high capacity of youth. Your words have brought tears to my eyes. Aging isn't easy. I couldn't have said it any better than you.

I go everywhere with a pen and mini notebook now...make notes avidly, although there's no guarantee of a speedy write up!
Keep capturing those flights of fancy Ron!

How very true. You have captured what we all experience in our efforts to seize an idea and put it down on paper. How many times have I been out and about and the poem starts writing itself in my mind and I have to hustle home to get it down on paper. If not, the poem is lost. In fact, once the poem is written, it too is lost to me. Gone with the wind. John

Ron, you have cleverly stated in poetic form exactly what happens to me. But the difference is: you do something about the incidental thoughts that enter your mind throughout the day. As for me, I'm usually in places where I can't do anything about committing my thoughts to paper. It happens mostly when I'm mowing the yard, or when I'm driving someplace by myself. I've written story after story in my thoughts while alone, but once I'm back to sharing my private world with others, then the creative thoughts I had are gone like the wind. I enjoyed your poem very much.

This says it all, if we procrastinate our writings, in a whim, our ideas have been drowned out by the trappings of our daily lives!
