Pain Is My Friend

The numbness that I have over much of my body for the last 55 years has shielded me from pain, but like the tingling feeling everyone has of their limbs going to sleep from inactivity or a pinched nerve, pain is a daily part of my life.

Pain Is My Friend

Oh, here comes that pain again.

I seem to have experienced you,

forever, since who knows when.

You are the bane of my existence,

your sour apple of my sore eye.

Why must I continue to endure you?

Why must I? Why?

You come overtly like an imperceptible itch,

and gradually build up momentum,

with an electric spasm or a giant hitch.

An itchy twitch I can't scratch, just bitch.

I attack you with exercise,

calm you with rest,

tried all the pain pills,

failed to the test.

Aspirin, Tylenol, Advil and such.

Baclofen for spasms, a lifetime,

of dosage, not too great a stretch.

Future may require more drastic measures,

Valium, Marijuana, Morphine and such.

OxyContin? You, I will never touch.

Until then, I will endure you daily,

watching you seemingly disappear,

while engaged in something dear,

like writing this poem weekly,

week to week, year after year.

As long as I keep my mind active,

engaged in something mentally strong,

the pain goes into the background,

as if in hiding, all day long.

Only to return when I happen to relax,

hugging me dear like a perennial tax.

Arriving at my doorstep like an old friend,

a friendship I'm stuck with until the end.

PAIN IS PAIN AND IF ONE HASN'T WALKED IN ANOTHER'S SHOES...ONE SHOULD NOT JUDGE. WHEN MY SON WAS SHOT IN 2017 HE WAS PICKED UP FROM A MD HOSPITAL AND TRANSPORTED TO GA WITH A GOOD AMOUNT OF OXYCONTIN...WE ARE GRATEFUL HE HAD IT. HE STILL HAD THE CLAMPS IN AND WAS IN A LOT OF PAIN. EVENTUALLY HE RAN OUT OF THE OXYCONTIN AND WE FOUND OUT WE COULD NOT GET IT IN GA. HE HAD HEALED ON THE SURFACE BUT STILL WAS IN PAIN AND THE ALTERNATIVES THEY OFFERED STILL DID NOT TOTALLY ALLEVIATE THEY PAIN AND THE MEDS EITHER DISORIENTED HIM OR KNOCKED HIM OUT...HE SLEPT ALL DAY. HE WAS LEFT WITH CHRONIC PAIN AND DID NOT WANT TO DESTROY HIS LIVER BY O.D. WITH OVER-THE-COUNTER PAIN KILLERS, WHICH HE WOULD HAVE TO DO TO 'REDUCE' THE PAIN...NOT TAKE IT AWAY. MARIJUANA WORKS BUT, ALTHOUGH HE HAS A FORK-LIFTING LICENSE, HE CAN'T GET A DECENT PAYING JOB BECAUSE HE CAN'T PASS THE PHYSICAL EXAM'S URINE TEST. PAIN IS NOT HIS FRIEND BUT HE'S CERTAINLY USED TO IT BEING AROUND...IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. PRAYING FOR A MIRACLE...WAITING AND LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. THANKS FOR SHARING, RONALD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.

Do what you must to find relief. I'm so sorry for how you suffer. I have fibromyalgia and I am no stranger to chronic pain. A poem that pulls at my heartstrings.

Dear Ron, I can empathize with you and your fabulous write! A family member did the generic oxycontin. Worked after the first hospital stay. The MD's said be careful, can become attached within two weeks! Didn't work after the second trip. She would sleep for four hours but would awaken after a terrifying nightmare. Why would someone continue to take a pill that did such horrible things! I admire your courage and stamina! Best regards, Bridget's Blog

I pray pain will never find you again, and if it does, then I pray for patience for you. Nice reading your poetry this morning, have a wonderful day, pain free if it is possible. xo

Very honest. I like the way you look at it.

Pain can be a muse for some. Pain being a 'friend' however, is a stretch. Most I know, suffer silently. Weighing using more powerful drugs to cope, and accepting that nothing about it will change in the days to come, is somewhat telling. Poets recognize the blissfulness and miseries of living, and apprehend that suffering is partly what makes us human. r

May your creativity which knows no bounds banish your pain to the background.

Writing helps to keep it at bay. Pain killers that would infect the mind would only generate a different kind of pain. We think alike on this issue. I loved your poem, Ron.

I have been relative pain-free for most of my life, Ron, and that is a good thing, my friend.

Ron...I wish I could say "I feel your pain" but, obviously that is not the way it is. This poem really stirs the emotions! Feeling bad for you and being unable to offer any relief for you.God bless you Ron.

I'm so sorry you are going through pain for so long, but if you can feel the pain there must be some type of ability with your nerves and muscles. Perhaps do some exercise that may help you to walk?

I have been having back pain ever since my children were born, and that is like more than 30 years already. These past several years had been more severe, but Tylenol and Motrin seem to help. Perhaps you can try some Motrin.

When it comes to hurting,
I offer this refrain,
you just have to grin and bear it,
and enjoy the pain.

An interesting topic for a poem that you have handled quite well. It is not often that the poem will take this topic on. Also interesting that you say the pain recedes into the background while you do your creative work, a testament to being "in the zone" as it were. Well done.
