A word that sounds almost evil but --some times we choose to be hostages

My mentor stood before me

As I dialed to call my classroom

Checking on them in my absence

“Don’t let your students hold you hostage”

Her words shocked me

I stared at her in surprise

But in quiet pondering

I soon realized

We are, indeed, all held hostage

By our love of our children and pets

By a paycheck, a boss, or employees

Or dependence on food, drugs, or booze

Hostage to bills that need paying

Hostage to memories good and bad

Or…to the crooked smile of a little grandchild

Hi Karen,
This poem really made me think. How true it is that we hold ourselves hostage, without even realizing. I have an ill parent and several pets to care for and at times, I find myself running in circles, telling myself I need to slow the pace. Yet, I still continue, knowing things must be done. It is a choice. Maybe I need more time to sit and breathe.

Thank you for this thought to ponder.
Jill

Oh, I can relate to this after keeping my english students amused, and only takes one complainer in the class to ruin your good work as well. Hostage to time and money. So true! How we deal with it is the question. Best wishes kenny

Great hook in the last line, Karen. Yes, indeed. Some overpower us and take us hostage AGAINST our will, while there are those to whom we would sell ourselves a hundred times over WILLINGLY. A neat tying together of thoughts and scenarios here, thank you. Kate xx

I think you're right, Karen - we often choose to be held hostage, and I guess that can often be both good and bad.

Oh how well I know that behind that cute little smile of my grandchild, is the quest to capture all of the candy stores spoils. Enjoyed.
