The hoof beats of equus

Echo through time eternal

His benevolent servitude

Pounded into the crust of the earth

On great muscles straining

Washington’s Nelson and General Lee’s great Traveller;

The history of the world’s great battles

Are written in Equine blood alongside his human masters

And peels of laughter, squeals of joy

Ride on the wind as the horse delights

Trigger and Buttermilk, and Silver and Scout

And heroes abound in the heart of the horse

As nations looked up from downtrodden years

With Seabiscuit’s battles so much like our own

He made folks want to dig deeper to find one last kick

While Secretariat, Ruffian, Phar Lap and Barbaro

All made us want to be better, braver, more noble somehow

To find that bit of heart that surpassed all expectations
