I Am a Poet

A challenge by one who I do not know,

Caused me to put some serious thought,

Into why I choose to write poetry,

Thus being, in fact, a poet.

I am a poet because there are rainbows,

And sunsets, sunrises, lightning and thunder.

I write because there are children and grandpas,

And kittens gentle purrs, and puppies licking faces.

I am a poet because I have laughed and I have cried,

Danced with joy and curled up in depression.

I write because I have both felt and caused pain,

And have learned lessons from them both.

I write because in searching for writing the words,

Life just makes more sense, becomes more real.

I am a poet because I live.

A very wise man once told me "the job of a poet is to evoke emotion in the reader" You have done that. I felt what you felt when I saw and experienced the same things, but you put them all together for me. Good job, madam poet.

It would be hard to just come out and say "yes, I am a poet". Good for you Karen, fun write and so easy to say..."wish I'd said that". Be well, Kathy

What better reason to be a poet than; it gives more sense to life. I think I like to write poetry because it decries wordiness and says so much in so few words.

When your heart says, "yes, you are one of them" mo matter what, come rain or sunshine, you will be able to tell us what tickles your soul with words that only poets can.
Yes, you are a poet!
