General Robert E Lee to the artist, Markie who would paint his horse, Traveller:

"If I was an artist like you, I would draw a true picture of Traveller; representing his fine proportions, muscular figure, deep chest, short back, strong haunches, flat legs, small head, broad forehead, delicate ears, quick eye, small feet, and black mane and tail. Such a picture would inspire a poet, whose genius could then depict his worth, and describe his endurance of toil, hunger, thirst, heat and cold; and the dangers and suffering through which he has passed. He could dilate upon his sagacity and affection, and his invariable response to every wish of his rider. He might even imagine his thoughts through the long night-marches and days of the battle through which he has passed. But I am no artist Markie, and can therefore only say he is a Confederate grey."

America, the Most Advanced Throwaway Society

There are not words to encompass the emotion,

That one feels for a horse who has worked well,

Showing courage, valor, dedication and confidence,

Values often not seen in one’s fellow man.

On being backed in, surrender impending,

General Cornwallis, (an Englishman) with his men starving,

Out of respect for the horses who carried them in war,

Slaughtered them and threw them in the river,

Rather than eating the flesh of these, their comrades.

But now, because of human greed,

What the horse has given to man through the ages,

Is sadly forgotten as the hypocrites who fought to end slaughter,

Now fight to re-open the killing pens,

For ending the slaughter forced price by the pound to drop.

I cannot figure out for the life of me,

Why those who claim to love our equine friends,

Cannot come up with a tax, a license or something creative,

Instead of just killing them, because we certainly are,

The most advanced throw-away society ever.

The killing machine, the eating of everything with four legs and a heartbeat is something shameful. I hope real change comes this millennium and we take a step up the evolutionary ladder before it's too late.

Yes, we are a throw-away society(I wouldn't say advanced, I'd say very disfunctional)and expedience has become our creed. The treatment of animals reflects our values as it pertains to life in general. So very sad...Lin

"A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" wrote Shakespeare.
Today, it seems all too often that the only thing we value is the kind of greed that discarded those polo horses and, as Karla said,
people who have used up their usefulness. -gene.

Karen, I have to agree with your title and last line! It's sad but true and you'd think we could do something to bring about change. But then there is that same snag of not enough who will unite, and try to make an impact! I was sick to learn of the carelessness of the pharmacy that gave the precription with too much of one ingredient, making them bleed internally, that killed the 20 polo horses. Our society has become ship-shod, and wears blinders, not willing to get involved. It makes me cry at the same time I want to rage!...ET

The most advanced throw-away society ever.

I sadly believe that we are advancing backwards, as our throw-away tendencies horrendously increase. You've shown that man once had far more respect for horses, and I know for a fact that we once had far more respect for pets and nature. Now, we just throw away our dogs and cats when they're not convenient anymore, and we destroy everything in nature that's in our way. We don't seem very 'advanced,' at all.

"He rode his mustang on the virgin prairie taking in his nostrils the scent of the land he loved and respected, he was the forefather of the Native Americans that hold the Mother Earth as pristine as the Great Spirit gave it to them."

I never knew how nice it was to be owned by a horse till my fiance introduced me to hers...His name was Sinders, a Tenn Walker & he actually liked me...even I could tell as he treated me differently from other men...he had to be put down after a very bad injury & I for one still miss him a great deal...Ed

Powerfully penned, Karen, not only animals, but people, too - when we've used up our usefulness, out we go - shame.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

This breaks my heart and I have a dear friend who cares so much for his horses, this "option" will cause his early demise. Why can't supposedly intelligent human beings think of more positive solutions instead of these measures?

Your poem really describes the US today Karen. I never thought I'd be ashamed to be an American but that thought is beginning to creep in now and then. I don't watch much TV but last Sunday I chanced upon a program, "Platinum Brides" where the couple spent over eighty-thousand dollars on table linens for their reception. How many starving people would that amount of money feed? How many homeless would it provide shelter for? I wish I could win the California Lottery so I could give all the money away. I know this isn't the subject of your poem but I had an urge to get on my soap box.
Hugs,
Marcia

any society that sees only in means of destruction as solution instead of means of salvation...is mentally ill - It is good to question everything!
