An Unlikely teacher's Pet

A poem for a few of my girl students that i have had over the years

An Unlikely teacher’s Pet

An outcast, always hiding in the shadows,

She never fit in, not in anyway, anyhow, anywhere.

No one seemed to notice the bruises she carried,

On her legs, her hands, her heart and her soul.

Her clothes reflected a time long past,

And set her apart from the others.

They were an obvious reason for others to steer clear,

Making her stick out like a wart or a sore,

Open invitations for poking fun.

She didn’t play with others at recess,

She existed, it seemed, in her own little world,

Lost in a book, drawing pictures, or just sitting,

Dreaming of a life with no bullies, at school or at home.

But something made her comply in life,

Some hidden driving force, a river carrying her along.

For when others rebelled, venting their anger,

She carried on never late, never missing assignments,

An unlikely teacher’s pet.

The poem captures , "the out sider" of the class and it does happen so often. Its filled with realism of daily life. Chidren can be mean to others at times ! Great write!........M

... so many of us adults can identify with this young character, Karen. And it breaks our hearts to read of it here in such acute detail and vivid observation. This speaks to the child within for whom we all ache and cry. You speak for the voiceless here and for those who feel they have no personal space to own or occupy. Hopefully they will find roots and the ability to stand firm and grow strong and confident with the kind of love and encouragement given to them by concerned onlookers and others charged with their care. Bless you, Kate xx

Looking for love...and the hope that a teacher will notice and will offer that love.

The quiet Matilda in this poem has all my sympathy. To the others she seems nothing, nobody, but, like Emily Bronte, she's a dark horse; still waters run deep, and she's got more worth than most of the bullies.

Your love of children and your empathy for the abuse many of them suffer shines through in this poem Karen. You're one of those people who make a difference in this world and especially in the lives of so many young people whom you've befriended and helped. My respect for you is without measure.
Fondly,
Marcia

Having been an educator for many years, I can relate to what you have expresse so well here, Karen. I can also relate because as a child in school, because of my French background, I was the victim of bullying on many occasions. Thank you for sharing. Love and best wishes,

Regis

My heart pleads with this one. Yesterday I picked up my granndaughtger at preschool where she has been having a hard time as she believes her teacher has changed and doesn't love her anymore, children need to know love at home and wherever their hearts are entrusted.

Leukemia wasn't a word spoken loudly because if so no one of us children had understood it.
1930's, we had a girl in our class that had gone bald (used scarfs to cover it) and suddenly she was there no more.
Many years after I understood why, but then it was too late to go to the girl hiding in the shadows and comfort her.
