Easier Passage

Forcing life, she uses power, sex, sheer force of will,

She pounds the pavement both literally and figuratively,

Up before dawn, Six miles plus every day,

Pushing past exhaustion, pain and fear.

Burning the candle at both ends, one job is never enough,

She has to do it all, and has to do it well,

A driving force seems always behind her,

Even when at the brink of sleep, her mind is never idle.

She cannot seem to find the softer side of how to live,

She sees others, women, sitting together,

Eating leisurely lunches, sipping fine wine,

Wandering slowly without purpose through the park,

Laughing about last nights’ episode of ‘Housewives’.

She wishes for an easier passage.

Wishes that the good things in life came with less struggle,

But she doesn’t know how to let that peace wash over her.

Having my own business as well as working full time, I can identify with this. There is still time to stop and smell the roses, but one has to make themself do it. Nicely done, Karen!

Work is a cruel master that pays in wages of lost time. A woman needs to learn the meaning of "balance" for the sake of her family and herself. Great poem that reminds us of both. Excellent.

No way anyone can run slowly on a step downhill, perhaps she forgot how to stop, look up, and let her soul do the flying.
Intriguing poem.

Maybe she feels the need to control her universe as things are spinning uncontrollably around her and she's afraid to let down her guard? To do so would open the gates of her fear veiled by a drive for excellence? Vicious circle. The self-critic enters in too, I think. The need for perfection fills a void due to self-love maybe? We all have a bit of this in us. Some are more driven than others. I'm a survivor because I've had to be and I can see traces in myself. This is a great revealing of a personality, Karen...

OCD or type-A personality disorder? One and the same I guess, but you've described it wonderfully Karen. I'd expect nothing less of you. I know women like you write about; I use to be one of them and than one day I learned to stop and smell the flowers.
Fondly,

I don't think anyone has it easy or even easier than anyone else. With each blessings comes a curse. There is always a price to pay for everything. It's just that some people are better at hiding their hardships and their fears.

Excellent poem, Karen. ~ Sara

Hi Karen, a woman forced to focus on work for so long and forced to make her career her survival tends to forget how to let the other kind of peace wash over her. Sad, but true... thank you for sharing this...

I think many spend an entire lifetime never achieving peace in their lives, yet wishing they could.

The need to overexcel can be as deadly a disease as cancer to some, whether it be at a career, a hobby, sports or just life. The mind is such a powerful thing and sadly it is formed and trained often from the time we are born. Parental, friend, and peer factors ingrain in us so many of our adult ideas. If we are at school and another kid calls us fatty for example we made spend a life time worrying about weight. The cycles can be broken but it is never easy and hard to do on our own. This was an excellant write Karen and I know many will relate to it.

Yes, they are some seriously driven people in the world; the work ethic so strong that they never can rest for time is money; the keep-fit philosophy so strong it runs in their veins like a commandment, but we should do our best to be champions, but not make such a fuss about it; work hard in a leisurely way, if you know what I mean!
