To Figure Out Me

just some thoughts from when I was with my sister-she is still progressing wel-

To Figure Out Me

Sitting by her hospital bedside,

I pondered hope and fear,

And life and death and so much more.

I learned patience and fortitude,

And drew on the compassion that makes me who I am.

I learned the depth in the value of forgiveness,

And that love runs deeper than any bit of ire.

I learned that some of the things deemed so important,

Don't really mean so much in the long run..

I figured out that letting go of some things,

Is as important as holding tight to others,

And that fighting to win the battle of life,

Are often not as sweet as those won in peace.

As I sat by her bedside and held her hand,

I dug deeply and pondered my life.

For I had time with my thoughts as I sat by her side,

And learned to figure out me.

Soul-searching ... YES! We are all complicated and multi-leveled, and sometimes prone to being impulsive, but there is one thing that can never be defeated, and that is our love for one another.

I am so happy that your sister is progressing. It is amazing the things we learn about ourselves and life, when it is another that is suffering and things are out of our hands.

You and sister remain in my prayers.

The need to answer someones cry for help, especially a family member be it child, parent, sibling or even the spouses of siblings is strong. I am currently dealing with a brother in law who is in the hospital and driving hsi wife back and forth the hospital...although we never spoke for several years prior to that because of a falling out. I guess compassion is a word of love.

Great introspective poetry. We do have to look in the mirror of our soul and ponder how we are getting long in this life. So happy to hear your sister is progressing well.

sometimes indeed the best way to have time, accuracy and reflection to "figure out me" is to ponder the wonder, value and being of someone else who echoes much of our own heartstrings. love the gentle, musing tone of this one, Karen. xx

Prayers for your sister, Karen, and may she continue to progress. We learn so much in adversity. Sometimes its a gift that we don't recognize until after the fact. But here in this introspective and inspiring write--you do. And you are accepting of the bitter as well as the sweet-a quality of strength which in turn strengthens us. Fine write...

Well done Karen! "Everything happens for a reason" seems to apply to your experience. That the experience made you stronger and wiser is what Karen Vanderlaan is all about. Superb poem we all can learn from. Also, glad, very glad, to know your sis continues to do well.
Fondly,
Marcia

One who has a loved one in the hospital is often forced to confront their own health, their mortality - you and your sister are in my prayers, Karen. As one who's been where you are, by her sister's side, I felt this one, deeply - well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
