Prescriptions for Death

Prescriptions for death, written every day,

So many names, from morphine, to Oxycontin, to …

God knows what.

I have never taken them, have never felt the need,

But there must be some hidden magic in them,

For there are those, so many,

Who will do anything to get them.

The addicts go doctor shopping,

Getting each one to write the needed script,

And some of those docs are all too happy,

To provide the desired drugs, lining their pockets,

With the lives of the ones addicted.

And they will lie and steal, using the threat of death,

To force one to give them what they want,

They take what they need then sell some for money to live,

Along with selling their souls.

So many of the jail cells are filled with those,

Whose lives have become nothing more than the next pills,

And the morgues also see the used up bodies,

Of those for whom help or willpower came all too late
