this is a poem written by my step granddaughter-I was touched by it

The Parade of Plastic

I straighten my hair...
to hide my eyes.

I wear foundation...
to hide my imperfection.

I wear eyeliner and mascara...
to hide how sad my eyes really are.

I walk with confidence...
to hide how shy I really am.

I look you in the eye...
to hide my fear.

I put on a smile...
to hide my broken heart.

But what am I really hiding behind this facade,
Behind this parade of plastic?

What?
I guess you'll never know...

The wall will always be up,
and I will always be behind it,
gasping for breath with a heavy heart
and a plastic smile.

I'll always be hiding,
waiting to be found.

She did a terrific job with this, and I love the last two lines, it does talk to a lot of people. Kind like me right now hiding.

"I'll always be hiding,
waiting to be found."

I loved it Karen, it holds a lot of truth and wisdom. I'm a William Shakespeare fan, "the world is a stage and we are actors upon it," I was just telling a friend of mine how a lot of my life is merely acting, I try to act like I have some sense when I'm really off the hook with my attitude, especially at work, cheers

Your granddaughter has a wonderful grasp of poetry and the ability to put her feeling in perspective in prose form, I hope you encourage her to join the den for I am sure she would have a good following of supporters here.

It is a plastic jungle out there, with many sad faces behind.
Young people shouldn't had to write those words, young people should be carefree, happy, roaming the world as it were belonging to them, as it is!

Karen, your niece has written something so honest and from her heart....and there are so many teens that feel this way. I remember those insecure feelings back then. So many times we hear people say, "If only I were young again,"....but I think that always has to be prefaced with....."Knowing what I know now."

Wow! A wonderful write. She sure is wise because she describes the majority 0f people. We never truly know what is inside another's heart.

Your Granddaughter shows great promise. Lovely poem, about the real person behind the facade. Don't we all do this to some extent?

my my....give that child some love....self love is step #1, as long as we continue to look for it outside of the self it will always remain elusive and the plastic facade further hardened....she is a very wise child to write so deep...

Well hell, I have to agree with Christine, this is a marvelous poem written about the saddness which prevails behind the masks we show the world. Nobody knows, and nobody really seems to care about finding out the "real" you.
