Small Talk Talk

What I want to say is,

How is your heart?

Instead I fumble and stumble,

Asking about your horses, I do love them so.

And what have you eaten so far today,

Have you gained back the pounds,

That radiation and chemo took away?

How ‘bout I send you some decadent dream bars?

They will put some meat on those bones.

And I think she knows, we are sisters after all,

That mixed in with all the small talk is,

The question, “How’s your heart?”,

And so much deep felt gratitude,

That we can have these small talk talks.

What you both went through together is a trial that cements relationships so that sometimes just a smile is enough...

It's an awkward conversation, a subtext, a skirting round the real subject, it's tact and sensitivity ---- you're good at that, karen!

Gorgeous, Karen, in meaning-writing-caring-sharing emotions, but, also, in word pre-pro-recreating, simple and heart-felt, syllables flowing and gentle. Like a 'small(big) talk'. Even as I am saddened, I am glad...

I've been down that road with my daughter. There are so many things that everyone wonders but no one asks. It becomes a whole different world, with communication being exchanged and avoided like a chess game. Very nicely done, Karen. Your sister is in our thoughts and prayers.

Karen,

How sad about your sister. It must be so difficult to have those small talks with her. May she get better soon. And if that is not to be may she find peace with the Lord and be pain free. God Bless You and your sister.

Aw, you are asking about that heart, concerned about it, worried about it, and she knows that, never for one minute think she doesn't. As she small talks back with you she understands the underlying questions and acknowledges them in her fashion, because although it is her heart which is the subject of the small talk conversation it is YOUR heart brimming with love that she sees, hears, and loves right back.

Small talks will be remembered often and longer that sanctimonious large tirades. The intimacy of small talk is like sharing a silly secret that will make us smile in complicity and make the rest of the world jealous.
Well done!
