For her, although her fading light
is obscuring every face,
Her weakened eyes strain
to find the way
to a once-familiar place.
Her "higher education" now is
schooling for the blind.
As she tackles her goals with
chin held high,
SUCCESS is on her mind.

Every day is a challenge,
but she takes them in stride 
in spite of each pesky trial;
With her guide-stick* gripped tight,
She'll keep tapping her way,
Till my feisty old friend
wins the victory,
Applauding herself all the while.

*A white cane is used by many people who are blind or visually impaired, both as a mobility tool and as a courtesy to others. Not all modern white canes are designed to fulfill the same primary function, however: There are at least five different varieties of this tool, each serving a slightly different need. (Wikipedia.org)  Most canes for the visually-impaired are straight, and could be referred to as a stick.
