You are too passionate
When you hate how far it fills you
Each breath I can almost
See smoke billowing from your mouth
You almost snort as you
Lash me with your tongue
And tear my flesh with your eyes
This beastman that comes unpredictably
Who birthed this thing?
His eyes are dark like soot and oil
His mouth sets like stone
Voice becomes deep and loud
Like a volcano building pressure
Then suddenly erupts
Woe to those too near
Always I am to blame
For waking him from slumber
Too often the fault of this
Rage let loose is mine
He bellows, he thunders
His strength explodes
In my broken heart
I cower or I dare
To stand my ground
Like a foolish speck
Staring up at the dragon
My approach matters not
In the end I am fired through
Best intentions blackened
With the fire of his discontent
When it all is over
It is always my fault
But it is not I who chooses
To give safe harbor to such a fiend
Breathing life into darkness
Feeding hatred like an infant on your breast
I am merely the excuse
This is a powerful write. It brought back so many of my own bad memories from my marriage. I wrote a poem called 'Held on a tight rein' that described much of the same feelings. Your poem is vivid and gut-wrenching. Oh how I know what this feels like.
