Dressed Inside Out

I never felt I belonged
I just didn't fit in.
There was something inside
To hide and deny.


I didn't know who I was
but felt tortured, lonely and awkward.
Lost, I walked through a marriage
and two children.


I watched life dance before me
in an elaborate play.
A mime that didn't register
in my brain.


Unfathomable to what made
others want to live.
Dressed inside out I hurt
and didn't comprehend.

Elizabeth, for all of the pain this very touching poem portrays, there is also a great deal of inner strength and understanding that shines through. What an amazing healing power writing has! Not only for those who write, but also for those who read (like me! :)
