Being mentally ill comes with a price. Especially when you first learn of your diagnosis and you are wondering exactly what that means to your life. Sometimes it means losing friends.

Used to Be

DON’T SLAM THE PHONE DOWN ON ME

I guess I didn’t have anything to say

I know you can’t take it when I go crazy

It’s just that I’d like to talk to you when I’m not that way.

Remember PTA where we were so cool

Remember the times when you swam in my pool

Remember when our kids were so small

Remember when your son fixed the battery and all

Remember the barbecues in the back yard

Remember when the times were really hard

Remember when you protected me from him

You were there for me but that was back then

 I know I’m not such a prize

I know my friendship comes with a price

I see your smile with your eyes agleam

My tears are flowing, they fall in pain.

They have a commercial now about mental illness that shows this realistic side. They show a group of someone's friends, and the crowd diminishes with each topic announced. When they get to mental illness, there's only one friend left from the group. They should use your poem instead. I can really feel the loneliness through your words. Sad, realistic, and jarring. You may not feel like a prize when you're in the grips of your illness, Liz, but you are a prize. You have many qualities to offer whoever is smart enough to remain! Hugs:)

Soul reaching verses, Liz. When such conditions occur, that is when you know whom your true friends are. Love and peace to you,

Liz,

Such a sad and truthful commentary on the reality that when the chips are down many of our "friends" run for cover. Knowing many mentally challenged, disabled, and handicapped folks-I understand that true compassion has to begin for us to heal one another and ourselves.

Keep the faith, you are a new wave of reason ebbing the shores of legitimacy.

Spasiba,

~D.

Real friends stick with you through it all. However, so many friends may not understand what you're going through. Remember one bit of sage advice - If you want a good friend, be a good friend. No matter what your state or condition, you have it in you.
Good poetry.

How easily friendship can be forgotten when things get a little tough...are we destined to always be such fickle beasts? A sad write here Liz, but a pertinent message that flows beautifully from your pen. Hope all is well? Panda :)

Makes me sad, I think we've all endured a friendship that has gone bad for usually something insignifant. Wonderful write...

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
