This is a rewrite of a poem I called "Faith". I like "Trust" better for it connotes a more variable range of certitude than faith.

Poem Artwork

There is a level of faith at core,
Nothing we do without assurance,
Without trust as feet hit the floor,
Won’t venture out front entrance.

Yes, trust is real, not a fake,
But not fully a hundred percent —
We measure risk we must take,
And danger we hope is absent.

We trust we can step out our door,
Without having undue alarm,
Yet know from recent historic lore,
Attacks could deal us harm.

We just know chances are good
That bad happenings are rare,
Unless it’s Iraq
or down in the ‘hood,
We’re just fine breathing fresh air.

It takes trust to enter a car,
For they’ve been known to explode,
Everyone to kill or burn and char,
We flinch to recall episode.

But we have trust that all is fine,
So we get in and drive on our way,
Knowing full well that time after time,
Cars wreck and take lives away.

We drive faster than we can brake,
If a bridge were out without warning,
But river we’ve crossed, for pity’s sake,
In traffic each evening and morning.

So we trust that bridge is still there,
And it’s fully paved on the highway.
Somewhere always needs repair,
But we arrive at our job for the day.

Expend effort with trust in employers
They’ll pay our wage for time in toil.
Yet Enron assails — their lawyers —
At recompense all attempts did foil.

Ending our chore, head to the store,
To pick up food we trust is edible,
Mad Cow headlines galore —
Global viruses more spreadable —

Doubt in our mind edges a fright,
We don’t know the source of our food.
Wonder if it’s been refrigerated right,
Or handled in ways that are rude.

Still our trust wins out, suppressing doubt,
For how else will our family be fed,
So we trust the chicken and sour kraut,
And drive the fears from our head.

We have trust in our spouse, no doubt,
That all day was spent true blue,
But divorce statistics have their clout,
It gives us something to chew.

Ah, but it’s wonderful just being alive,
To be on earth is the greatest worth.
Trust we derive, and all must survive,
Testing limits of trust from birth.

In trust, we trust. When all risk is gone, it's pretty boring.

You have managed to put this generations fears right out in the open, to be thought of generations from now...I wonder what their fears will be?

Amazing write, enjoyed fully!

But I too, must think on the lighter side, for fear, will seethe...
Love and Peace~
Kimmy~

Dear Leland,

Without trust, all that remains is fear and I, for one, would rather not be born at all than to live with such a cloud constantly over my head. Therefore, let us "eat, drink and be merry"!

Love & Light always and in all ways,
Joseph*

When we consider the synonyms of "trust" and "faith", we find that many of them are interchangeable... as "trust" and "faith" are, themselves, as synonyms of one another, and of other mental perceptions or notions of assurance, confidence, reliance, and belief - regarding ourselves or others, as well as our own or external circumstances. Without any of those, and especially without a healthy dosis of those regarding our own possibilities, and how we can (and must) use them to be able to fare in this world where we live, we would be... well, you know. LOL! Besides, it's a good deal of both that which allows us to take what is currently defined as "the big leap into the unknown"... and to get up, when the "unknown" happens to be kind of hard and rocky, brush the dust, tend to the scratches, bandage the head... lift it up, and go on, limping, if need be, but go on again, with enthusiasm! A very exciting theme, dearest Leland, treated with wisdom, your irresistible "spice", and as impeccable an use of the language as always. Loved it! (And I can't resist sharing this with you: thinking about these common aspects of trust and faith, I was reminded of a delightful and hilarious scene from the movie "A walk in the clouds", in which Anthony Quinn plays a Napa Valley patriarch of Mexican origin, and is delivering a speech of encouragement to Keanu Reeves, who is a candidate, not very highly regarded by the rest of the family, to his granddaughter's hand; at a certain point, he says: "Persevere, son, and you'll be successful. You're a good man, and I have faith in you... but your fly is open!" LOL!
Lots of love and {{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}} from one who has faith in you (... no need to look at the fly, now... LOL! It's the unconditional faith of one who knows you also have faith... and use it wisely)
