Ten thousand years before the current time,
A son asked his father something on his mind,
“Why does Apollo shine only during the day?
Why does the night always swallow him away?”
The father cast a fearful look into the sky,
“Tis not a good idea of the gods to ask why.
Apollo rides a blazing chariot of gold:
Sky lighting godly hands fiery reins hold,
Whip ingot chargers with hellish glee,
His trip must finish ‘fore night can be!”
A thousand years before the current time,
A son asked his father something on his mind,
“Why does God shine the sun only during day?
Why does God make it always drop away?”
The father cast a fearful look into the sky,
“Tis not a good idea to ask our God why,
He makes the sun cross well overhead,
Slides under earth’s edge while we bed,
Rise at morning edge, start another day,
God made earth like a plate, it’s just that way.”
A thousand days before the current time,
A son asked his father something on his mind.
“Why does God make sunshine during the day?
Then make the night come and take it away?
The father cast a knowing look into the sky,
“It’s always a good idea to ask ourselves why.
The earth is a sphere that swings around the sun,
Like a ball on a string swung around for fun.
It rotates as it follows its path of gravitation,
As earth turns, sunrays strike our nation,
Then fall on others as their position is lit,
Earth’s shadow is night when we’re in it.”
We look at these conversations in reflection:
Gods have lost knowledge section by section,
As man wrested life’s facts away little by little
What from God or gods he could aggressively whittle.
So if a poet says “God only knows,”
He means: we don’t yet know how it goes,
But given time, and inquisitive investigation,
We’ll find “God only” a figment of imagination.
A wise and beautiful poem.
