Frankenstein For President

I apologize for messing with this after posting, but single spacing with this editor is hit and miss.

It bothers me to know, come November,
That only two candidates will be offered,
Each, future is determined to encumber,
With ideas bad as his opposite number.

Each may also have notions quite bad,
That might help some folk get ahead,
Despite non-math idiocy fad,
Others must pay, after all’s been said.

Neither candidate helps everyone,
One panders this group, other that,
And with every big program that’s done,
A bigger mess, more pork, more fat.

How fun, if candidate was articulated,
Could take a piece here, replace with that,
Do Frankenstein proud, if pieces formulated,
Not body — but his mind we’d carve at.

Maybe I’d start with GB — not too bad,
I’d excise desire to not maintain
Separation of church and state, the cad,
And remove degradations certain,

By not siteing in government institutions
School prayer, Nativity and Decalogues,
And by not siteing on private distributions,
Versions of sex police and pettifogs.

To start with domestic policy needs,
Insert energy conservation priority,
Add energy source development seeds,
Then sew in a piece for stem cell authority,

I’d leave the piece, tax cuts to keep,
Add a piece to trim abhorrent waste,
Cut corporate welfare quite deep,
Government hogs get barely a taste.

Weed out population expansion bonus,
Limit tax deductions on child dependents,
Limit immigration to green card status
And to integratable new residents.

Foreign policy pieces we’d insert,
Even-handed Mid-East policy,
Israel: withdraw from Palestine dirt,
Palestine: you reign in bombers, see?

Iraq: if democracy fails, partition three,
Afghanistan: continue current plan,
U.N.: re-engage, more cooperative be,
Soften grip, but keep big stick in hand.

My candidate and yours not from same can,
For we likely have divergent notions.
Alas, either is virtual boogey man,
With mind pieced from various promotions.

Now isn’t that the way it already is,
Each candidate comes in November,
Has favorite mindset, virtual pieces
Very few of ours he’ll remember.

Each voter sees what we want to see,
But what we see is not what we get:
Frankenstein mind, quilted not by me —
But special interest with largest bet!

I couldn't help but chuckle at this one; every four years, it seems we're voting for the least of two evils. Personally, I hate that it always comes down to that.

From a literary standpoint, I have a small quibble in Stanza 6: the word "siteing" doesn't exist, according to Merriam-Webster Online. Did you intend to use "citing" instead? Otherwise, it looks good to me, as usual.

Unfortunately, any voting system has it's fundamental flaws. As a Brit, I find America's method of election very strange, but it is what you have and you have to make do with it.

I'll always remember a slogan written on a bridge over the M4 Motorway in South Wales during the dark days of the 80's when the Thatcher government was busy slitting the throat of Wales. It read

'Wales is ruled by a government it did not elect'

Meaning..... the conservatives ruled over Wales despite the fact that not one single Conservative candidate won a seat in Wales !!

As they said in The Matrix ' Fate is not without a sense of irony and humour' !!

Is it too late to run? I have a ton of vacation/sick time at work and besides, they're a really supportive bunch! No? fine!
In that case, I'll vote for you. Hmmmm... Leland.... I'm a dedicated liberal... but politicians, as a rule, cause a rash... and I'm not fully
immunized. All in all, for me, it boils down to idiology... sigh... and I'm still hoping an ELECTED preseident (in my lifetime)
remembers what that is. Sign me disillusioned but ever hopeful. (grin) Thanks for the alterations on this breezy, freewheeling piece.

Ahhh, a Frankenstein future president! How about a cloned, patchwork combination of some of the great thinkers/scientist/humanitarians of all times? Those passionate men/women of yore? Oh yeah, now this brings to mind other possibilities, such as designer ideal mates of the future! Hahaha, maybe I'll come back in a hundred years (if mankind hasn't blown itself and the plant to kingdom come) and see what other Frankensteins we've created! Great write, Leland!

Running for Pres are we? Maybe, in the 21st century, we'll get true democracy where everyone will express their desires or needs, the majority will win, and some robot president and Congress (actors) will try to carry them out at scale pay. Hey? I think we have that now! Anyway, the poor neglected minorities will start to complain and, ....

I wish that readers of this eyes opener don’t close theirs. Your presentation today is so profound that I flew on the wings of hope to the Basilica of Justice to read this poem.

You have shown here that we do not understand what The Constitution of The United States of America, means, and that is the reason that this Government Violates it, and we have tolerated, and therefore violated it too.

You, Poet of Voice of Justice, are telling us here that if we don't read and obey the Constitution of The United States of America, we will ended up in a slave yard.

I will tell the Congressman of my area to READ the Constitution, and to demand that the Officers of Government do it too, and invite everyone to do the same.

The existing US Congress has supported a Government that violated the Constitution; therefore both are enemies of the Sovereignty of the People of United States of America.

The people, only the people have SOVEREIGNTY. When the Executive Officer violates the Constitution, REMOVAL shall be ordered and the OUTLAW removed and prosecuted accordingly. Now if the Congressmen misrepresent the people, then the situation is very clear: REMOVAL IS THE ANSWER.

Let us read The Constitution of The United States of America, what is written there one must obey! You don’t need to be any genius to explain what is there. If it says REMOVAL, it is removal. That is the smallest book of the legal letters, Please, READ it, give yourself a chance to learn Freedom, and to demand obedience of our basic and HIGHEST LAW, LEARN IT AND DEMAND RESPECT FOR IT, before the schools of our children become a slave-yard.

Most Honorable Free-Citizen and Esteemed Poet, if my comments cause inconvenience to Your readers, please print it and send it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, DC.

I am very pleased to know a true free American.

Thank You for using You writing Gifts to defend the interest of the Sovereignty of our people.

Patriotically, and Respectfully,

Andre Emmanuel Bendavi ben-YEHU

Very insightful. When todays governments are spoken about I think back to the first settlers in Canada and the United States, that came here to get away from what is now happening here. I tend to think we need new thinkers to make necessary changes, because the systems in place now are not working. Great write.

Indeed John is right....the answer of course would be a "designer candidate"....on the other hand, perhaps Jerry's got the right idea and you can be our Write In Candidate! The problem is that best intentions crumble in the face of pressure from special interest groups, and you know that your fellow "AuthorsDen-ites" would EXPECT preferential treatment - hence you would be back at square one. Sigh....

This is a great write Leland.

Oh, it seems so easy when we sages (sages?) commit our plan to paper, we'd do this, and that, but not that, and heaven forbid . . . So I'll stand in line Leland to become a charter member of the "Leland Waldrip for President Committee," and in November when you have won and take the oath in January I'll be amazed just like you are today that you just wasn't able to keep the promises that you made. So, don't make that run, man, I think I'd like to keep you as a literary friend and not a hated president who couldn't live up to his promises.
